View from Above

My son, a pilot, took me for a ride in a small private plane.  I was intrigued with how the world, when viewed from above, was at the same time familiar and abstract.   This led me to explore and discover the abstractness of the earth from an aerial perspective.  In this series, the subject of piece piece is inspired by my travels and trying to capture the mood or feeling of that place.  My medium is encaustic, (beeswax, resin and pigment) melted to create a paint that is applied and worked in a molten state.  With it, I create polished, translucent, smooth areas juxtaposed with areas where I employed my signature ‘drop’ technique to build interesting textural areas.
